The Bird That Cries, “HELP!”

With Carol Edholm

Saturday, March 20, 4:00 p.m. Eastern

Join us as we explore a fascinating species of ornamental birds that are beloved, and hated, around the world: The peafowl.  Who are they?  Where did they originate?  Why are they so beloved and hated at the same time?  Find out why people who are unaware of these birds often call the police when their early morning slumbers are shattered by shrill cries of, “Help, help!”

Carol is a lifelong stamp collector who enjoys both country and topical collections. She has been extensively involved in youth philately, and more recently she has concentrated on researching, collecting and exhibiting peafowl. She is president of the Seattle Philatelic Exhibition (SEAPEX), an annual World Series of Philately (WSP) stamp show. In 2009 she was awarded the APS Kehr Future of Philately Award, and in 2010 she received the Meritorious Achievement Award from the Northwest Federation of Stamp Clubs.

Susan Jones will show us how interesting it is to learn about both a topic and related stamps with her presentation on Maria Sibylla Merian: Artist, Scientist, Explorer. Susan is a retired geologist with eclectic collecting interests including the African coelacanth, medieval illuminated manuscripts, and paleontology. An ATA board member, she exhibits competitively and is president of the Spring Hill Stamp Club, West Dundee, Ill.

Art Deco! The 1925 Paris Exposition

With Tom Broadhead

Saturday, February 6, 4:00 Eastern

The 1925 Paris “Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes” highlighted French supremacy in the decorative arts and the Art Deco movement. Although no permanent structures remain from the exposition, art deco and its revivals are global examples of its importance. Its postal artifacts, including stamps, cancellations, postal history and postcards are vivid reminders of the event.

We will talk about stamp development, exposition promotion, and scandals associated with the stamps and the fair!

Tom Broadhead is 2nd vice president of ATA and has been an avid stamp collector for more than 60 years. Although Tom’s primary collecting interest is the 20th century postal history of France, he is an ardent champion of the study of images on stamps and how they reflect the history and culture of their issuing nations and has collected the 1925 Art Deco theme for more than 35 years. A professor of geology at The University of Tennessee, Tom enjoys occasionally teaching a seminar on the culture of stamps for honors students. He is active in the Knoxville Philatelic Society, where he has been newsletter editor for 15 years.
